My soul still remembers them, and is bowed down within me.
“Yahweh is my portion,” says my soul. “Therefore I will hope in him.”
Yahweh is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him.
My eye affects my soul, because of all the daughters of my city.
Lord, you have pleaded the causes of my soul. You have redeemed my life.
Yet if you warn the wicked, and he doesn’t turn from his wickedness, nor from his wicked way, he will die in his iniquity; but you have delivered your soul.”
Nevertheless if you warn the righteous man, that the righteous not sin, and he does not sin, he will surely live, because he took warning; and you have delivered your soul.”
Then I said, “Ah Lord Yahweh! Behold, my soul has not been polluted; for from my youth up even until now I have not eaten of that which dies of itself, or is torn of animals. No abominable meat has come into my mouth!”
and say, “Thus says the Lord Yahweh: ‘Woe to the women who sew pillows on all elbows, and make kerchiefs for the head of persons of every stature to hunt souls! Will you hunt the souls of my people, and save souls alive for yourselves?
You have profaned me among my people for handfuls of barley and for pieces of bread, to kill the souls who should not die, and to save the souls alive who should not live, by your lying to my people who listen to lies.’
“Therefore thus says the Lord Yahweh: ‘Behold, I am against your pillows, with which you hunt the souls to make them fly, and I will tear them from your arms. I will let the souls go, even the souls whom you hunt to make them fly.
though these three men, Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in it, they would deliver only their own souls by their righteousness,” says the Lord Yahweh.
though Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in it, as I live,” says the Lord Yahweh, “they would deliver neither son nor daughter; they would deliver only their own souls by their righteousness.”
Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine. The soul who sins, he shall die.
The soul who sins, he shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be on him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be on him.
Again, when the wicked man turns away from his wickedness that he has committed, and does that which is lawful and right, he will save his soul alive.
There is a conspiracy of her prophets within it, like a roaring lion ravening the prey. They have devoured souls. They take treasure and precious things. They have made many widows within it.
Her princes within it are like wolves ravening the prey, to shed blood, and to destroy souls, that they may get dishonest gain.
The Babylonians came to her into the bed of love, and they defiled her with their prostitution. She was polluted with them, and her soul was alienated from them.
So she uncovered her prostitution and uncovered her nakedness. Then my soul was alienated from her, just like my soul was alienated from her sister.
“Therefore, Oholibah, thus says the Lord Yahweh: ‘Behold, I will raise up your lovers against you, from whom your soul is alienated, and I will bring them against you on every side:
‘Speak to the house of Israel, “Thus says the Lord Yahweh: ‘Behold, I will profane my sanctuary, the pride of your power, the desire of your eyes, and that which your soul pities; and your sons and your daughters whom you have left behind will fall by the sword.
For thus says the Lord Yahweh: “Because you have clapped your hands, stamped with the feet, and rejoiced with all the contempt of your soul against the land of Israel;
They will make themselves bald for you, and clothe themselves with sackcloth. They will weep for you in bitterness of soul, with bitter mourning.
They will bring you down to the pit. You will die the death of those who are slain in the heart of the seas.
He heard the sound of the trumpet, and didn’t take warning. His blood will be on him; whereas if he had heeded the warning, he would have delivered his soul.
Nevertheless, if you warn the wicked of his way to turn from it, and he doesn’t turn from his way; he will die in his iniquity, but you have delivered your soul.
“You, son of man, tell the house of Israel: ‘You say this, “Our transgressions and our sins are on us, and we pine away in them. How then can we live?”’
In the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar, Nebuchadnezzar dreamed dreams; and his spirit was troubled, and his sleep went from him.
The king said to them, “I have dreamed a dream, and my spirit is troubled to know the dream.”
“As for me, Daniel, my spirit was grieved within my body, and the visions of my head troubled me.
“Yet even now,” says Yahweh, “turn to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning.”
So the ship master came to him, and said to him, “What do you mean, sleeper? Arise, call on your God! Maybe your God will notice us, so that we won’t perish.”
I said, ‘I have been banished from your sight; yet I will look again toward your holy temple.’
The waters surrounded me, even to the soul. The deep was around me. The weeds were wrapped around my head.
“When my soul fainted within me, I remembered Yahweh. My prayer came in to you, into your holy temple.
Will Yahweh be pleased with thousands of rams? With tens of thousands of rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my disobedience? The fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?
Misery is mine! Indeed, I am like one who gathers the summer fruits, as gleanings of the vineyard: There is no cluster of grapes to eat. My soul desires to eat the early fig.
Behold, his soul is puffed up. It is not upright in him, but the righteous will live by his faith.
You have devised shame to your house, by cutting off many peoples, and have sinned against your soul.
I cut off the three shepherds in one month; for my soul was weary of them, and their soul also loathed me.
because I remembered God with all my soul.
If you turn to him with your whole heart and with your whole soul, to do truth before him, then will he turn to you, and won’t hide his face from you. See what he will do with you. Give him thanks with your whole mouth. Bless the Lord of righteousness. Exalt the everlasting King. I give him thanks in the land of my captivity, and show his strength and majesty to a nation of sinners. Turn, you sinners, and do righteousness before him. Who can tell if he will accept you and have mercy on you?
I exalt my God. My soul exalts the King of heaven, and rejoices in his greatness.
Let my soul bless God the great King.
And every man of Israel cried to God with great earnestness, and with great earnestness they humbled their souls.
For it is better for us to be made a plunder to them. For we will be servants, and our souls will live, and we will not see the death of our babies before our eyes, and our wives and our children fainting in death.
And now, kindred, let us show an example to our kindred, because their soul hangs upon us, and the sanctuary, the house, and the altar rest upon us.
For we have heard of your wisdom and the subtle plans of your soul. It has been reported in all the earth that you only are brave in all the kingdom, mighty in knowledge, and wonderful in feats of war.
And Judith said to him, “As your soul lives, my lord, your servant will not spend those things that are with me, until the Lord works by my hand the things that he has determined.”
Judith came in and sat down, and Holofernes’ heart was ravished with her. His soul was moved, and he exceedingly desired her company. He was watching for a time to deceive her, from the day that he had seen her.
But when the rulers of the army of Asshur heard the words, they tore their coats, and their soul was troubled exceedingly. There was a cry and an exceedingly great noise in the midst of the camp.
Her sandal ravished his eye. Her beauty took his soul prisoner. The scimitar passed through his neck.
Because wisdom will not enter into a soul that deviseth evil, Nor dwell in a body that is held in pledge by sin.
Beware then of unprofitable murmuring, And refrain your tongue from backbiting; Because no secret utterance will go on its way void, And a mouth that belies destroys a soul.
Because by mere chance were we born, And hereafter we will be as though we had never been: Because the breath in our nostrils is smoke, And while our heart beats reason is a spark,
Which being extinguished, the body will be turned into ashes, And the spirit will be dispersed as thin air;
For our alloted time is the passing of a shadow, And our end retreats not; Because it is fast sealed, and none turns it back.
Come therefore and let us enjoy the good things that now are; And let us use the creation with all our soul as youth’s possession.
And they knew not the mysteries of God, Neither hoped they for wages of holiness, Nor did they judge that there is a prize for blameless souls.
Because God created man for incorruption, And made him an image of his own proper being;
But the souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, And no torment will touch them.
In the eyes of the foolish they seemed to have died; And their departure was accounted to be their hurt,
And their journeying away from us to be their ruin: But they are in peace.
For even if in the sight of men they be punished, Their hope is full of immortality;
And in the time of their visitation they will shine forth, And as sparks among stubble they will run to and fro.
Accursed is their begetting. Because happy is the barren that is undefiled, She who has not conceived in transgression; She will have fruit when God visiteth souls.
And if they die quickly, they will have no hope, Nor in the day of decision will they have consolation.
Better than this is childishness with virtue; For in the memory of virtue is immortality: Because it is recognized both before God and before men.
But a righteous man, though he die before his time, will be at rest.
(For honorable old age is not that which stands in length of time, Nor is its measure given by number of years:
Being found well-pleasing to God he was beloved of him, And while living among sinners he was translated:
He was caught away, lest wickedness should change his understanding, Or guile deceive his soul.
Being made perfect in a little while, he fulfilled long years;
For his soul was pleasing to the Lord: Therefore hurried he out of the midst of wickedness.
How was he counted among sons of God? And how is his lot among saints?
Verily we went astray from the way of truth, And the light of righteousness shined not for us, And the sun rose not for us.
Wisdom is radiant and fades not away; And easily is she saw those who love her, And found of those who seek her.
And incorruption brings near to God;
Beneficent, loving toward man, Stedfast, sure, free from care, All-powerful, all-surveying, And penetrating through all spirits That are quick of understanding, pure, most subtle:
For wisdom is more mobile than any motion; Yes, she pervadeth and penetrateth all things by reason of her pureness.
And she, being one, has power to do all things; And remaining in herself, reneweth all things: And from generation to generation passing into holy souls She makes men friends of God and prophets.
When I considered these things in myself, And took thought in my heart how that in kinship to wisdom is immortality,
Now I was a child of parts, and a good soul fell to my lot;
Nay rather, being good, I came into a body undefiled.
And rule the world in holiness and righteousness, And execute judgement in uprightness of soul;
For a corruptible body weighs down the soul, And the earthy frame lies heavy on a mind that is full of cares.
To whose wickedness a smoking waste still witnesseth, And plants bearing fair fruit that comes not to ripeness; Yes and a disbelieving soul has a memorial there, a pillar of salt still standing.
She entered into the soul of a servant of the Lord, And withstood terrible kings in wonders and signs.
For your incorruptible spirit is in all things.
Therefore also among the idols of the nations will there be a visitation, Because, though formed of things which God created, they were made an abomination, And stumbling blocks to the souls of men, And a snare to the feet of the foolish.
turmoil, Ingratitude for benefits received, Defiling of souls, confusion of sex, Disorder in marriage, adultery and wantonness.
And also, laboring to an evil end, he mouldeth a vain god out of the same clay, He who, having but a little before been made of earth, After a short space goes his way to the earth out of which he was taken, When he is required to render back the soul which was lent him.
His heart is ashes, And his hope of less value than earth, And his life of less honor than clay:
Because he was ignorant of him that moulded him, And of him that inspired into him an active soul, And breathed into him a vital spirit.
But most foolish were they all, and of feebler soul than a babe, The enemies of your people, who oppressed them;
For you have authority over life and death, And you lead down to the gates of Hades, and lead up again.
But though a man may kill by his wickedness, Yet the spirit that is gone forth he turns not again, Neither gives release to the soul that Hades has received.
For great are your judgements, and hard to interpret; Therefore souls undisciplined went astray.
For those who promised to drive away terrors and troublings from a sick soul, These were themselves sick with a ludicrous fearfulness:
