What does "Sirach 47:12" mean?
Sirach 47:12 refers to Solomon, son of David. The verse is saying:
"After him (David) rose up a son, a man of understanding..." This clearly points to Solomon, who was renowned for his wisdom and understanding, particularly as described in the Book of Kings.
"...And for his sake he lived at large." This is a more nuanced part of the verse. It means that because of Solomon, David was able to live out the remainder of his life in prosperity, peace, and security.
