and to wrestle down the pains of the body, however excessive; and, through the excellency of reasoning, to abominate all the assaults of the passions.
But the occasion now invites us to give an illustration of temperate reasoning from history.
And you will be acting, I think, still more senselessly, if you follow vain conceits about the truth.
For over the ungodly you shall tyrannize; but you shall not lord it over my thoughts about religion, either by your arguments, or through deeds.
Confessedly, therefore, religious reasoning is master of the passions.
For had the passions been superior to reasoning, I would have given them the witness of this mastery.
Ridiculous would it be were it not so; and I prove that reasoning has not only mastered pains, but that it is also superior to the pleasures, and withstands them.
By the spirit of reasoning, and the reasoning of Isaac, he rendered powerless the many-headed instrument.
But perhaps some might say, It is not all who conquer passions, as all do not possess wise reasoning.
But nothing of this kind did the young men say or think when about to be tortured.
And it is impossible to overlook the leadership of reflection: for it gained the victory over both passions and troubles.
How, then, can we avoid according to these men mastery of passion through right reasoning, since they drew not back from the pains of fire?
so that seven-towered right-reasoning of the young men, securing the harbour of religion, conquered the intermperance of passions.
O reasonings more royal than a king, and freer than freemen!
For just as in a council-room, beholding in her own soul vehement counselors, nature and parentage and love of her children, and the racking of her children,
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
But I tell you, that everyone who is angry with his brother without a cause will be in danger of the judgment; and whoever says to his brother, ‘Raca!’ will be in danger of the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of Gehenna.
“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery;’ Exodus 20:14
but I tell you that everyone who gazes at a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart.
Neither shall you swear by your head, for you can’t make one hair white or black.
But if your eye is evil, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!
For with whatever judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with whatever measure you measure, it will be measured to you.
Behold, some of the scribes said to themselves, “This man blasphemes.”
Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, “Why do you think evil in your hearts?
for she said within herself, “If I just touch his garment, I will be made well.”
Knowing their thoughts, Jesus said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand.
You offspring of vipers, how can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.
The good man out of his good treasure brings out good things, and the evil man out of his evil treasure brings out evil things.
I tell you that every idle word that men speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment.
Others fell among thorns. The thorns grew up and choked them.
That which enters into the mouth doesn’t defile the man; but that which proceeds out of the mouth, this defiles the man.”
But the things which proceed out of the mouth come out of the heart, and they defile the man.
For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, sexual sins, thefts, false testimony, and blasphemies.
These are the things which defile the man; but to eat with unwashed hands doesn’t defile the man.”
They reasoned among themselves, saying, “We brought no bread.”
Jesus, perceiving it, said, “Why do you reason among yourselves, you of little faith, ‘because you have brought no bread?’
But he turned, and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me, for you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of men.”
But if that evil servant should say in his heart, ‘My lord is delaying his coming,’
They were exceedingly sorrowful, and each began to ask him, “It isn’t me, is it, Lord?”
Command therefore that the tomb be made secure until the third day, lest perhaps his disciples come at night and steal him away, and tell the people, ‘He is risen from the dead;’ and the last deception will be worse than the first.”
But there were some of the scribes sitting there, and reasoning in their hearts,
Immediately Jesus, perceiving in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves, said to them, “Why do you reason these things in your hearts?
When his friends heard it, they went out to seize him: for they said, “He is insane.”
There is nothing from outside of the man, that going into him can defile him; but the things which proceed out of the man are those that defile the man.
He said to them, “Are you also without understanding? Don’t you perceive that whatever goes into the man from outside can’t defile him,
He said, “That which proceeds out of the man, that defiles the man.
For from within, out of the hearts of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, sexual sins, murders, thefts,
covetings, wickedness, deceit, lustful desires, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, and foolishness.
All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.”
They reasoned with one another, saying, “It’s because we have no bread.”
But he, turning around, and seeing his disciples, rebuked Peter, and said, “Get behind me, Satan! For you have in mind not the things of God, but the things of men.”
They reasoned with themselves, saying, “If we should say, ‘From heaven;’ he will say, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’
But when she saw him, she was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered what kind of salutation this might be.
He has shown strength with his arm. He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
But Mary kept all these sayings, pondering them in her heart.
Yes, a sword will pierce through your own soul, that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.”
As the people were in expectation, and all men reasoned in their hearts concerning John, whether perhaps he was the Christ,
But Jesus, perceiving their thoughts, answered them, “Why are you reasoning so in your hearts?
But he knew their thoughts; and he said to the man who had the withered hand, “Rise up, and stand in the middle.” He arose and stood.
But they were filled with rage, and talked with one another about what they might do to Jesus.
The good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings out that which is good, and the evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings out that which is evil, for out of the abundance of the heart, his mouth speaks.
Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw it, he said to himself, “This man, if he were a prophet, would have perceived who and what kind of woman this is who touches him, that she is a sinner.”
Jesus, perceiving the reasoning of their hearts, took a little child, and set him by his side,
Jesus answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things,
But he, knowing their thoughts, said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation. A house divided against itself falls.
When he returns, he finds it swept and put in order.
The lamp of the body is the eye. Therefore when your eye is good, your whole body is also full of light; but when it is evil, your body also is full of darkness.
Therefore see whether the light that is in you isn’t darkness.
He reasoned within himself, saying, ‘What will I do, because I don’t have room to store my crops?’
“The manager said within himself, ‘What will I do, seeing that my lord is taking away the management position from me? I don’t have strength to dig. I am ashamed to beg.
They began to question among themselves, which of them it was who would do this thing.
He said to them, “Why are you troubled? Why do doubts arise in your hearts?
Therefore Jesus answered them, “Don’t murmur among yourselves.
Then they sought for Jesus and spoke one with another, as they stood in the temple, “What do you think—that he isn’t coming to the feast at all?”
During supper, the devil having already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him,
Repent therefore of this, your wickedness, and ask God if perhaps the thought of your heart may be forgiven you.
Now all the Athenians and the strangers living there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell or to hear some new thing.
“I myself most certainly thought that I ought to do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth.
Because, knowing God, they didn’t glorify him as God, neither gave thanks, but became vain in their reasoning, and their senseless heart was darkened.
in that they show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience testifying with them, and their thoughts among themselves accusing or else excusing them)
in the day when God will judge the secrets of men, according to my Good News, by Jesus Christ.
“whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness.” Psalm 10:7
So now it is no more I that do it, but sin which dwells in me.
but I see a different law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity under the law of sin which is in my members.
For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.
For the mind of the flesh is death, but the mind of the Spirit is life and peace;
Don’t be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God.
For I say, through the grace that was given me, to every man who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think reasonably, as God has apportioned to each person a measure of faith.
Now accept one who is weak in faith, but not for disputes over opinions.
I know, and am persuaded in the Lord Jesus, that nothing is unclean of itself; except that to him who considers anything to be unclean, to him it is unclean.
“For who has known the mind of the Lord, that he should instruct him?” Isaiah 40:13 But we have Christ’s mind.
And again, “The Lord knows the reasoning of the wise, that it is worthless.” Psalm 94:11
But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged by you, or by man’s judgment. Yes, I don’t judge my own self.
This I say for your own profit; not that I may ensnare you, but for that which is appropriate, and that you may attend to the Lord without distraction.
“All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are profitable. “All things are lawful for me,” but not all things build up.
Whether therefore you eat, or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I felt as a child, I thought as a child. Now that I have become a man, I have put away childish things.
Brothers, don’t be children in thoughts, yet in malice be babies, but in thoughts be mature.
while we don’t look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal.
For if we are beside ourselves, it is for God. Or if we are of sober mind, it is for you.
